University of Oklahoma, USA
As our division grows and matures, we would like to develop our reputation as a premier research institution in the field of MIS. With this in mind, while heedful of the need to maintain continuity in criteria used to evaluate faculty, we suggest two lists of MIS journals. The current list indicates journals that people have been using for guidance in selecting journals to submit their work. It reflects the original committee's (Carol Saunders, Terrie Shaft, and Pam Carter) logic for the journals that appear on that list. This list will serve as a benchmark for evaluating faculty portfolios up to this point in time. The target list is offered as guidance in future selection of outlets for your best work. Journals featured on this list represent journals we would ideally like represented in our division's portfolio of faculty publications. Current List |
| Premier Journals | |
MIS Quarterly |
Although we don't consider JMIS to be as high in quality as MISQ and ISR, we do consider it to be a high-quality journal with a lot of visibility in our field. Further, it clearly is recognized as one of the top five, if not one of the top three journals in our field. MANY schools place this journal on their 'A' list. We decided to put it in the elite list because we felt that it was a good journal to target for publication (after MISQ or ISR) and it would offer our faculty more respected publication outlets*. |
| Niche Journals | |
Management Science |
Clearly Management Science is a top publication outlet for MIS researchers with a quantitative bent...We would have no problem arguing that this is an 'A' journal *. |
Sloan Management Review |
The other journals on our Top Specialty Journals list all received a ranking of 10 or better on at least one ranking study. Mike Buckley considers HBR, SMR, OBHDP, DS, and MS to be 'A' journals and Org Science to be a 'B' journal. Others in the Management Division rate Org Science more highly --- as an 'A-' journal. Fran Ayres has this to say about some selected publication outlets: Decision Science - Accounting would probably rate a B or B+ but in the college this has been rated an A so we have rated it an A. Sloan Management Review very is visible but not a research journal- I would say probably a B (This is tough to rate because of the visibility factor- I think you would have to consider the article and its impact) Harvard Business Review same as sloan mgt. review In addition, we will consider publications of MIS faculty members to be in 'A' journals if they are on the list of 'A' journals with broad general coverage in other MFPCB Divisions/School or if they are on the list of top specialty journals for other MFPCB Divisions/School. We will ask the other Divisions/School to inform us as to what these journals are*. |
| Premier Journals | |
MIS Quarterly |
Clearly, our top two outlets for manuscripts in which IT occupies a central role. |
JMIS |
Although we don't consider JMIS to be as high in quality as MISQ and ISR, in recognition that our division is in transition, and in the absence of a truly viable third core MIS journal, we have selected JMIS. |
