What is endnote.gif (1034 bytes) ?

is a bibliographic database and reference management program, available for either Windows or Macintosh operating systems.  allows you to keep in touch with all your references. Store them systematically in a database properly designed for bibliographic data - journal articles, books, book chapters, conference proceedings, magazine articles, audiovisual material, patents, or even your own reference type definitions. Forget the 5 x 3 filing cards, backs of envelopes, etc.!

Searching: Use 's powerful search capabilities to locate the references you need. Search your reference database or on-line databases swiftly for references meeting Boolean criteria - e.g. "Find all the references that contain the keywords 'sleep' and 'snore', with 'Smith' as one of the authors but not 'Jones'".

Citations and bibliographies: Include citations in your manuscripts, and have  format the citations and bibliographies automatically, in any style you specify. Just locate the reference you wish to cite and ask  to insert the citation at the cursor position in your word processor text. When your citations have all been inserted, specify the formatting style for citations and bibliography and  will automatically format the citations and compile and format the bibliography.

To help build existing libraries, simply contact the library orginator (click the name to email), who will combine the libraries and acknowledge contributions. To add new libraries, contact Felix Tan.

Please Note :  Library files are PC-format. To open them on a Mac, hold down the shift key while selecting Open from the File menu. Select the library and open it (source: Record #48 in the EndNote support area).

endnote.gif (1034 bytes) Styles

Please Note:

1. EndNote styles for the Macs are StuffIt archives. You will need StuffIt to extract the actual style file. If you have difficulty getting EndNote on your Mac to recognise the downloaded style file, please email Catherine Middleton.

2. The styles below are developed in version 3 originally. The updated styles are from more current versions of Endnote – v.5 and 6. As of April 2003, the version the style is in will be highlighted. Thanks to Mike Cushman, we now have these styles in version 4 (click here to download the zip file).

3. Having problems with upgrading version 4 or earlier styles to version 8 (latest version of EndNote)? Version 8 can only convert from v.5 on up. One solution is to open the v.4 or earlier styles in v. 5, 6 or 7, which will convert them into v.8 compatible format. Thanks to Douglas Dean, we do not need to find out the hard way that the EndNote website and user manual do not describe this style limitation.

Converting PC style files to Mac (courtesy of Catherine Middleton):

Change the file type and creator using a program like ResEdit (with the Get Info function). This is necessary so that the Mac OS recognizes the files as EndNote files. The Type needs to be set to ENFT (in caps), and the creator to ENDN (in caps). If you use EndNote 4, the files will show up in the style manager initially as pre EndNote 4 styles. These need to be updated using the 'edit' function and then they are ready to go.

» PubMed Database

            Goal: Search the PubMed for publication references and add it to your endnote file

Task 1: Set EndNote to connect to PubMed database.

Start EndNote program, on the menu bar, go to "Tools" then "Connect" then "Connect..."
A new window will popup with the list of databases and providor names. Choose "PubMed(NLM)" and click on "Connect". This will establish the connection between EndNote and PubMed and brings up a dialogue window for searching the PubMed database where multiple criterias can be used.

Task 2: search the PubMed database for references and copy them to your own EndNote file.
Once some criterias are entered, click on the "Search" button, and it will show the number of matches found. If the number is large, you may want to have more criterias to narrow down the search. Once decided, you can decide to either retrieve all references found or just a subset. a window with the references will be display, you can then select the references you need and copy them to your own endnote file by click on "Copy # References to" button and choose your endnote file.

If you have problem searching the PubMed database, you may need to update the configuration file. Click on the link and save it to EndNote's filter folder.

endnote.gif (1034 bytes) Tips & Traps

» Version 8 Change Case Feature (Middleton)

            The Change Case feature don't actually work in EndNote 8 properly.  You may want to turn off the Sentence Casing for your output style, so that the titles will be entered in the paper as they were entered into the references.  There is a patch planned for EndNote 8 to resolve some issues, but unfortunately EndNote can't say when this patch will be out or what will be covered in it.

» Version 8 Incompatibility with XP Service Pack 2 (Warkentin)

This can now be fixed by installing a patch from the End Note site. Check out this link.

» Version 8 Backward Compatibility with Earlier Versions (Warkentin)

There is a danger that if one member of a research team uses v8, that ALL members of the team need to upgrade to v8 – as v8 is not backward compatible with earlier versions.

» Converting Earlier Versions of EndNote Styles to Version 8 (Dean)

            Version 8 can only convert from v.5 on up. One solution is to open the v.4 or earlier styles in v. 5, 6 or 7, which will convert them into v.8 compatible format.

» EndNote 8.0.2 is now available (Al-Ahmadi)

            The long-awaited update to EndNote 8 has been recently released (update 8.0.2). If you are using EndNote 8 or you are planning to do so, this update is a must. It solves major problems and provides more enhancements such as:
* Ambiguous citations
* Change Case settings
* Mouse scroll wheel functionality in Reference window
* Preview and Library window preferences are remembered after each session
* Performance improvements when importing, exporting, and converting libraries
* Multiple citations format in RTF Document Scan
* Journal Name abbreviations

Other IS Bibliographic Resources

»Mobile Business Literature (Scornavacca) new.gif (26402 bytes)

M-lit is the first online bibliographical database dedicated to mobile business literature. It aims to provide a hub where the Information Systems academic community can share references, abstracts and keywords from international academic journals and conference proceedings.

»IT/IS Outsourcing (Lee)

This page can contains a broad list of references on IT/IS Outsourcing. The list can be queried by total ascending references, outsourcing issues, chronological order, and theory-related references.

»IS Bibliographic Repository (Chua, Cao, Cousins, Mohan, Straub, and Vaishnavi)

A very comprehensive IS bibliographic repository. It can be queried by journal, author, title as well as institution.The selected bibliography can be exported in EndNote and BibTex formats. In addition, faculty members can request records to be modified and there is a facility to upload bibliography files onto the site.

»Technology Acceptance Model (TAM)

This site gives a list of the bibliography relating to Technology Acceptance Model. It can serve as a point of reference for those interested in the theoretical and practical aspects of TAM.

Participation

The above EndNote libraries are just the beginning. Without the generosity of your colleagues this ISWorld Net Research and Scholarship page will not be possible. Please come forward and help us build this into an invaluable resource to the IS community worldwide.

More subject areas are needed. More links to other EndNote resources on the Internet are also needed. There are two ways you can participate;

»By sharing your EndNote libraries, styles and filters
        -   in a subject area not listed above, or
        -   additional references to continue building the existing libraries

»By suggesting new EndNote resources on the Internet

If you would like to contribute in one of the above ways, then please send a message to the Department Editor.
